It happened on I-295 in Middletown Township at around 3:20 p.m. on Feb. 26, troopers said. Investigators believe the driver of a Ford Taurus was traveling west in the eastbound lane, going the wrong way.

Around mile marker 5.2, the driver of the Ford struck an oncoming Jeep Compass head-on, causing "heavy front-end damage" to both cars.

Drivers Alexander Wetzel, 31, of Media, and Jenna Paulaski, 21, of Ewing, New Jersey, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to the state police report.

Penndel, Middletown, and Parkland fire companies assisted on the scene, troopers noted. A police investigation is ongoing.
